First choose what the lower opening must do

A straight or bootcut opening can pass over an ankle boot. A narrow leg can go inside a tall shaft, but then both calf room and knee folds need checking. A flared or wide leg needs clearance from the ground during a full step. Choose the shoe you want to wear first; needing a higher heel to rescue a dragging hem is a length problem to resolve.

Wide and straight are two real choices

The ivory shirt with wide denim creates a broad lower area. The dark tee, straight denim and shorter leather-look jacket create a more compact lower outline. Neither is a body-type prescription. If a wide hem catches on stairs, the straight route changes that opening without replacing your entire upper outfit.

Bootcut and flare with flats

Bootcut widens below the knee; the flared example makes a stronger lower opening. Inspect each actual pair with its flat boot or loafer. A longer hem can cover the shoe in a still image and still drag while walking, so use a step and stair test rather than a pose. The untucked shirt offers a different upper finish from the plain knit.

Rise, stretch and length are separate checks

Sit to check waist, seat and crotch room, then bend and reach. A shorter inseam does not fix a rise or thigh problem. A stretch label does not tell you how an actual pair behaves across a day. Before alteration, ask what changes are possible at the original hem, knee and flare; moving one edge can change another design feature.

Choose the actual day, not a universal jean rule

Denim needs explicit workplace permission. Medium-weight denim may be a poor choice for your hotter conditions or a wet route where a broad hem gathers water. Keep the same shirt or knit while substituting a lighter trouser or a narrower opening, and write that actual substitution into your day plan. Black tie and suit-required work use different complete routes.

Keep the useful part of the experiment

Save two different constructions and compare garment lists, hem, weather and fit notes. Try your own shirt with your preferred jean first. If only the photo colour differs, that does not resolve a new task. The wide-jeans guide adds torso closures, cropped layers, openwork bases and diagonal upper shapes when the lower shape is already decided.
